On 13 March 2025, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the sale, sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children, Mama Fatima Singhateh, presented to the UN Human Rights Council the report on her country visit to Australia in 2023.

“Australia has devoted much attention and resources to improving policy, legal and institutional frameworks for adequate prevention and protection of children and young people from violence and sexual exploitation… Despite the positive developments, progress is limited by several factors such as the lack of federal law or harmonised laws between states and territories on the sale, sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocol…. [and] [i]n addition, the lack of comprehensive and disaggregated data at the national level.” – Mama Fatima Singhateh, UN Special Rapporteur on the sale, sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children, during presentation of report to UN Human Rights Council.
