Submission Summary (including details of the inquiry and ASA’s recommendations):

The Senate Legal And Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee undertook an inquiry into the Modern Slavery Amendment (Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner) Bill 2023.

Consistent with their previous submissions to multiple Parliamentary Committees, Anti-Slavery Australia’s submission supports the Bill to establish the Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner (Commissioner) as an independent statutory office holder.

This submission also points out the Beyond Storytelling: towards survivor informed responses to modern slavery report and the Speak Now About Forced Marriage podcast. These resources demonstrate the essential contribution that survivors can make to the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Australia’s response to modern slavery.

The submission notes the Beyond Storytelling report’s 6 recommendations to the Australian Government which stresses the importance of survivor leadership and participation, and also recommends a statutory Advisory Council with broad functions, to provide advice and guidance to the Commonwealth Government on the development, implementation and evaluation of the next National Action Plan to Combat Modern Slavery.
