Hidden in Plain Sight report a huge step forward in the fight against modern slavery

Anti-Slavery Australia welcomes the final report of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade’s Inquiry into establishing a Modern Slavery Act in Australia, which outlines a way forward in the fight against modern slavery in Australia and overseas.

The Report "Hidden in Plain Sight: An inquiry into establishing a Modern Slavery Act in Australia" recommends the introduction of a Modern Slavery Act in Australia, which includes:

  • the establishment of an  independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner,
  • introduction of mandatory supply chain reporting requirements for certain entities to report on modern slavery risks in their supply chains,
  • the establishment of a national compensation scheme for victims of modern slavery,
  • a review of the visa framework for migrant workers,
  • the ratification of the Forced Labour Protocol,
  • measures to address ‘orphanage tourism’; and
  • improving the criminal justice responses to modern slavery.

If implemented, the comprehensive recommendations contained in the Report will significantly improve the lives of the men, women and children who experience slavery and human trafficking in Australia.

Anti-Slavery Australia has long advocated for and supports these recommendations and we look forward to continuing to work with the Australian Government and stakeholders to see a Modern Slavery bill tabled in 2018.
