Australian Government to fund Anti-Slavery Australia's development of website focussing on forced marriage and innovative legal advice service

Anti-Slavery Australia is excited to announce the Commonwealth Attorney-General's department has funded a 4 year project to support the development of a dedicated website provide an evidence base for information about the practice of forced marriage, preventative strategies, referral and support services. The website will also host a new legal advice service for any person facing forced marriage.

Anti-Slavery Australia will use the funding to produce a web platform offering information about child and forced marriage including information about the legislative framework, community responses, referral organisations and available supports. The web platform will also provide access to legal advice to people at risk of forced marriage through email and text message. We look forward to consulting with government and non-government organisations throughout the development of the new resource.

We have over 10 years of experience working with survivors of trafficking, slavery, and slavery-like conditions including forced marriage. In recent years we have seen a dramatic increase in inquiries around issues of forced marriage and requests for legal advice from individuals in or facing forced marriage.

This Government funded web platform will improve the provision of education, awareness-raising and advice to people at risk of forced marriage to support the prevention and detection of this crime, and promote early intervention. It will allow vulnerable men and women to seek confidential legal advice in a safe and secure environment and will supplement our existing face-to-face legal service and online e-learning tool for frontline workers and the broader community.

The web platform is expected to be live in late 2015.
